The world of “Digital Albums” can be overwhelming. There are many different types and forms of these albums – Flush Mount, Coffee table books, Magazine books, digital books – all are variations on a theme. Each vendor has their own terminology. There are press printed books, books based on photographic paper, albums using ink-jet prints, self-mount books – the list of possible variations goes on.
How do you, the photographer, actually make money out of all of this? Some have already gone through the learning curve and understand this world really well. Others are in the early days.
At SANDIS ALBUMS, our commitment is to help you work your way through all of this. Our focus is not only on the albums themselves, but also on the workflow, on understanding design software, understanding the process, and ultimately helping the professional photographer to make money out of albums.
We distribute or manufacture 4 separate product lines to cater to the full range of budgets and quality requirements. Our lines include:
- The MEMADOR album – winner of the DIMA (Digital Imaging Marketing Association) album competition held at 2008 PMA. This is a press printed album, printed on very thick stock, with pages individually laminated, and using a patented ‘lay-flat’ technology. This album is large (15x12 or 16.5x12), and is proving to be tremendously popular with photographers because it is something they feel they can easily sell. Many cover options give the albums individuality.
- FLUSH MOUNT album – this album is hand manufactured in our factory in Toronto. Pages are thicker, with photographs mounted across both pages, or individually on each side, with a “gutter” between them. A variety of cover options are available to give each album that “one-of-a-kind” possibility.
- SELF MOUNT albums – we have a large selection of self-mount albums, including the Superior Album from TAP Albums. These albums are excellent value and serve a very useful niche in any photography business.
- COFFEE TABLE Album – this is the typical album with thin pages that look and feel like your high end magazine or coffee table book available from the bookstore.
What about “traditional” albums?
Well, believe it or not, these still sell pretty well! We have 2 ranges of these, both sell well, despite the digital revolution.
ROYAL BOUND ALBUMS – this range is manufactured in house by our skilled bookmakers. They are individually manufactured to order, and can be customised to the exact number of pages required. This range includes both large and parent albums, matted and slip-in.
IMPERIAL ALBUMS – this range of albums is aimed at those brides with a tight budget. It is really well priced. Because of it’s pricing, it is increasingly being used as an album to be included in base packages. This range is proving to be extremely popular across a wide range of studio business models, from those catering to the high end to those who specialise in the “tight budget” bride!
